Due to a good forecast I had high hopes for today. Conditions were expected to be "big" so I rented a tiny 70L RRD WaveCult Hardcore to make sure I was properly tooled up for the job - a board I have been wanting to try for a while. After a quick warm up on my 75 I got the 70 on the water, gybed straight away on to a whopper of a wave, bottom turned far too late and...

Crunch. My first broken mast of the trip and an absolutely trashed 4.5 added in for good measure. Arse. Half-hour swim back to the beach and straight to Hotsails Maui to purchase a new Superfreak that I had been thinking about buying for a while, plus a new mast. Ouch my credit card hurts.

So I got to try out lots of nice new kit today which was all great (especially the board) but conditions turned out to be a bit rubbish really. Very messy swell with a significant short period crappy NE'ly component on top of the nicer long period NW'ly. Plus a very gusty onshore wind and no sunshine led to a disappointing day all round. (as is often the case when your expectations are high)

There's plenty more wind in the forecast though so fingers are crossed for better tomorrow.
